Curitiba may not be famous for having many festivities during Carnaval, but that doesn’t mean the city doesn’t celebrate it. It sure does! The thing is, in Curitiba, Carnaval comes earlier!

During the four Sundays leading up to Carnaval, Paraná’s capital brings all the joy to the streets with Garibaldis e Sacis. Founded in 1998, Garibaldis e Sacis is a pre-Carnaval group (in Portuguese, called bloco), who organizes street parades/parties with traditional Carnaval songs (marchinhas). The name Garibaldis and Sacis was chosen due to the fact that the starting point of the Carnaval parade, when the group was founded, was the Saccy Bar and the end point was Garibaldi Square.

Fifteen years later, the celebration has become a big deal for Curitibanos, who dress up in costumes and go have fun with friends and family at the parade. Last Sunday (20th), approximately 10 thousand people enjoyed the party at the historical center of Curitiba. The next events will be held next Sunday (27th), when the theme will be “Garibaldis go to the beach”, and February 3rd, when the theme will be “Inverted Garibaldis” (where men can dress like woman and vice-versa), both at 4 p.m.

Enjoy Carnaval before other cities! Have fun with Garibaldis e Sacis in Curitiba!
