Literal translation: “To take the little horse away from the rain”.

This expressions is used when a person wants to emphasizes that there is no way she is going to give up of doing something.

Example: Se ela pensa que eu não vou para a festa, ela pode tirar o cavalinho da chuva, porque eu vou!

If she thinks I’m not going to the party she’s dead wrong.

Fala sério!

Literal translation: Talk seriously!

This expression is the Brazilian Portuguese equivalent to “no way!” but it is also used to mean “you’re kidding!”.

Example: Você está dizendo que eu sou a menina mais bonita? Fala sério!

You’re saying that I’m the prettiest girl? No way!

Engolir sapos

Literal translation:  to swallow frogs

This expression basically means to “do things one does not like”.

Example: Na vida você tem que engolir muitos sapos.

In life you need to do a lot of things you don’t like.

Partir desta para a melhor

Literal translation:  “to go from this one to the better one.”

This expression is used when people want to say that someone died.

Example:  He passed away.

Estar com a pulga atrás da orelha

Literal translation: To have a flea behind the ear

This expression is used when someone wants to express they he is suspicious about something.

Example:  Eu estou com a pulga atrás da orelha nessa oferta de emprego.

I’m feeling suspicious about this job offer.

Enfiar o pé na jaca

Literal translation: To stick your foot in the breadfrit

It means to really go for something, to do something deeply.

Example:  Eu ia comer só um pedaço de bolo, mas acabei enfiando o pé na jaca.

I was going to eat only a piece of cake but then I ate it all.

Viajar na maionese

Literal translation: To travel in the mayonnaise

This expression is used when someone said something crazy.

Example: Meu colega disse que a África é um país, ele viajou na maionese.

My colleague said that Africa is a country, that’s crazy.
