Brazil from A to Z: Ouro (Gold)

ourop

The history about our gold begun when the Portuguese colonizers arrived in our land for the first time. Initially  they were looking for native Indians to capture for the slave trade but they actually found gold in an area the size of London in present-day Brazil called “Minas gerais” (literally translated as “general mines”).

During the 17th and 18th century almost half million of Portuguese plus half million of slaves had relocated to southeastern Brazil to mine gold. This initial gold rush lasted until 1800s and many people still try to make a living off the industry.

Nowadays many miners and garimpeiros from Brazil and all around the world go to the Amazon rainforest to mine for this preciosity. The bad part about all of this is that all this mining brings the destruction of the ecosystem and has has destroyed whole state-sized chunks of Amazonia.

In spite of all this damaging, gold is a hedge, safe and an excellent form of investment. All investors should have at least some gold in their portfolio, according to a research report from Trinity College and Investopedia says ” Gold should be an important part of a diversified investment portfolio because its price increases in response to events that cause the value of paper investments, such as stocks and bonds, to decline.”
