31-05-2016
urbanism in Brazil

First of all: What does Urbanism means? Urbanism indicates the material aspects of urban living and the cultural aspects of city life. The Urbanism of a place is the interaction, the organization, the movement and the self-renewal aspects of a locale.

The Urbanism only started to be a thing in Brazil when the city of Belo Horizonte was founded on the 19th century, because there was a necessity of intervention in the cities that were suffering because of increases in population. This first phase had a direct inspiration from the European models on which there were a visible concern about the central areas of the city.

Years later, the urban aspects in Brazil became much more than only an aspect involving physical-territorial planning. It became a reflection of how a city reflects the society’s state and how it express a conception of the world.

Nowadays, one of the most important Ministers in Brazil is the Cities’ Minister which has the goal of combating the social inequality, transforming the cities in places more “humanized”, amplifying the population access to residences, sanitation and transportation. Urbanism in Brazil is currently marked with a big diversity of situations and dynamics. Everyday young people such as students are migrating to central areas. In the other hand, in areas related to industrial farming, tourism and logistic, new cities are arising and old cities are becoming larger.
