Transportation Around Brazil

Whether you’re going around your city in Brazil , travelling to other cities or even to other countries in South America, here it goes some tips:

Taxi: Taxis in Brazil are typically metered; where the distance determines the price you pay. A digital meter records this. Upon entering a metered taxi you should verify that the starting price tariff is 1 (except from 9pm – 6am, Sundays and holidays when it will be a tariff 2). If the meter is not working, set a price before you set out. Taxi drivers don’t expect tips (however, leaving the change never hurts).

Uber: Uber is quite popular in Brazilian major cities. It’s practical and cheaper than taxi. Most drivers are polite and nice. Uber faires might vary depending on rush hours and availability. Another alternative is Cabify.

Buses: You will have plenty of time to travel around Brazil on weekends and after the placement. There are 3 different classes of travel, Comum or Convencional, which is the cheapest. Buses fill up fast but make many stops and do not cater for comfort. The Executivo offers reclining seats, AC and fairly safe travel as these do not pick up passengers as the side of the road. The Leito is an overnight coach and it’s fares are double that of the Executivo, but offers reclining seats with footrests, washrooms and refreshments.

Airplanes: It’s easy to travel around Brazil by airplane, all the major cities have airports. Sometimes you can find pretty good fares, making your trip almost the same price as by bus and saving you a lot of time. The main companies in Brazil are: Latam, Gol, Azul and Avianca. Usually, the companies have fares promotions on Fridays, so be alert. You can purchase your ticket online or at the airport in your city.

Further Travel: If you plan to travel to other South American countries you should find out about whether you need a visa in order to travel there, prior to leaving your country.
