In celebration of MPB Day, we will show you a little bit of our large music variety.
MPB is an acronym in Portuguese for Brazilian Popular Music and is celebrated in September 27th.
Its history starts with the indians and Jesuits during the colonization; the evolution of the fusion of those two rhythms still playing at popular parties.
At the end of the 17th to the 19th Century, Brazilian music had a big influence of African and Portuguese music , turning to be a style of romantic and improvisation music as: samba, maxixe and valsa.
Nowdays, Brazil has new styles of music pleasing different styles.
Samba – the most international famous Brazilian style of music. It’s the main attraction during Carnival and it’s perfect to listen while you are at a pub, having a beer with your friends. Have fun listenig to Arlindo Cruz and Seu Jorge, two famous samba singers.
Bossa Nova – this style came from samba and jazz. The most famous song is known all over the world, “Garota de Ipanema” (The Girl from Ipanema, in English). The original writers are Vinícius de Moraes e Tom Jobim, but it others versions were recorder by famous singers as Madonna, Frank Sinatra, Cher, Amy Winehouse. Rock – rock has been in Brazil history as much as in any other country. From havy metal to the newest style called “Happy rock”, specially dedicated to the young female public, having as characteristics colorful clothes and agitated and happy songs. Recently the style was a big influence at the fashion world. Check out the bands Capital Inicial and Barão Vermelho.
Pagode – pagode was originated of samba during the 60’s in Rio de Janeiro suburbs. The two successes of the mont are Sou o cara pra você and Tá vendo aquela lua.
Sertanejo – the songs by rural and urban composers are romantic, touching and sad. Usually the duos dress cowboys hats, jeans, boots and a belt with a big beckle. Victor & Léo are pretty popular.
Sertanejo Universitário – College Country Music, in English. This type of country music is different of the usual. It’s very agitated, you can dance all night long listening to it. Last year a Brazilian singer became famous all over the world, especially in Europe, with the song “Ai se eu te pego”, it also has a English version named “Oh If I Catch You”. Rap and Hip Hop – these styles of music are becoming popular in Brazil and influencing the fashion world, especially among the teens. Marcelo D2 is famous for mixing rap and samba; Projota is a new artist in the scene.
Eletronic and House Music – electronic and house music are also becoming popular in Brazil. The country has a strong internacional influence in this area. Last decade many clubs acceded to the styles. In South of Brazil there is a club called Green Valley, the best and biggest club in the country and the third one in the world, according to many magazines.
